And The Haircut Wins

This morning someone woke up and decided that she DID NOT want to go to preschool. There was another pressing issue at hand, so preschool was not attended today. And here's the reason why ...

Over the weekend, it was discovered by Moo that someone had taken the scissors and cut her own hair. Which was after she had used her scissors to cut her Barbie's hair. It was just a chunk off the side, but still it was a noticeable chunk. And when one has longish willy-nilly hair, it's not always that noticeable. At least to LaLas who are just trying to keep little ones from running off into danger.

Anyhow, someone's mother was informed of the cutting that apparently was performed sometime on Saturday. And when it was brought to everyone's attention on Sunday, it was obvious that some remedy was needed for the new hair situation.

LaLa considered trying to remedy it, but everyone knew that would be a bad idea, since LaLa had never been to hair-cutting school, and all attempts to trim little girls' bangs back in the Dark Ages were disasters. All the professional hair cutting places had closed by the time this trim was discovered, so any remedy had to be put off. And that's where we were this morning.

A deal was struck that for the opportunity to not attend preschool today, someone would go to the profession hair stylist and get her hair styled. And so she did. Everything went quite well, perhaps due to the bowl of suckers that could be approached after good behavior in the stylist's chair, And in the end, someone turned out quite well and all were happy - especially LaLa, who didn't have to get our her good scissors after all!!

Post-Bath Fashion

Need I say more? I mean, what does one add to Elsa pajamas and a yellow headband? Nothing, right? Of course, if these were in my size, I'd probably have been seen sporting this look at the Wal-Mart on this Saturday night ...

Anyhoo, the point is that a bath was achieved and hair was washed and pajamas were put on, all without screaming and bloodshed.

In other words, it was a good Sunday night!

Breakfast Is Breakfast ...

Today breakfast was brought to you (well actually that would be brought to Everley - on a tray) by the blend CH. As in Cheerios and Cheetos. Because some mornings, you get what you ask for, as long as you eat it. And if LaLa is too tired to do any better. Anyway, isn't that what weekends are for?

Of course, now I realize that I forgot the CHocolate milk and the CHerries and the CHips ...

The Seasons of Downton

I have become quite the "Downton Abbey" fan. I watched the first two seasons, then got waylaid, and then it was announced that this season would be the last, I purchased the first five seasons and binge-watched them so I would be current when the current (and final) season started.

Lynnette has also been a fan, but seemed to miss episodes of this season, and couldn't find them on the Roku-Hulu-Internet-PBS television after they were aired at their regularly scheduled time. So, I decided to go ahead and purchase this season. Now, those of you who are not fans may be wondering how that can be. Especially since all of this season hasn't aired yet. It's simple - this season was shown in England last fall and ended at Christmas. So, recently this season was made available on DVD. And I bought it.

I loaned it to Lynnette for her to catch up, making her swear on her tea and crumpets that she would watch ONLY THE EPISODES THAT SHE MISSED and not watch ahead, lest she find out what happens ahead of me. And so she has. And so here we are.

And where is that?  The FINAL EPISODE officially ends on Sunday. And since it's the final episode and since we are both caught up, we decided we would not wait and plug in the final episode for a Downton Abbey Farewell viewing. And so we did.

Except that we didn't have tea and scones for snacks. Nor did we put on our fascinators for this momentous event. We just loaded up in the den, put in the DVD, and found a comfy spot to watch. And so we started, until the defective DVD player in the den decided to skip about. We allowed it a few minutes to gather itself, but it just kept skipping about. Well this just wouldn't do, and we felt that Carson would be aghast, so we quickly yanked the DVD out of the crummy player and headed to another room, the living room, where such a formal occasion should have been held anyway.

Once that television had warmed up (it's an old big projection type television), the DVD player started without problem, and we were soon ensconced in the goings-on at Downton. I would tell all the goings-on, but I would hate to spoil it for those of you who don't deserve to know, since you don't watch it anyway. Let's just say that all is well, that Lady Mary has come through her season of mean, that Lady Edith may have a season of happy, that Lady Cora may have a season of intelligence, and that everyone else has a season of what they should have.

And now "Downton Abbey" has ended. And I must find a new series to follow. Or maybe just follow Lady Violet's advice ...

A Season Of Mad

Today I am mad. Am I mad at someone? Yes, everyone. Am I mad at something? Yes, everything. Why? Because currently I am in a season of mad. And please don't ask me about it, because then I will be mad at you.

Nothing started it. And nothing will end it. It's just that right now, in this moment, every little thing and person is making me mad. It's the stupid things people say and do, and the circumstances that I find myself in. Most of it is of no consequence, but it still makes me mad.

The good news is that like everything else, this too shall pass. I shall have my mad spell, and then maybe a pity party, and then all will be good again. For everything there is a season, and right now it's mad season.

Think it's time for some Hershey's ...

Kind Of A Wanted Poster

I need to find the people who create these type of things. First of all, I think they are Skinny Minnies who, since they have no fear of calories, think of these concoctions because it seems yummy. Second, they are obviously evil scientists because these concoctions look pure evil to me. Finally, these evil scientist skinnies obviously aren't as smart as me, because clearly this needs some whipped cream and sprinkles on top!!

So would I try this treat?  Nah - I'd just apply it directly to my thighs and move on!

Tracking

Today I got an email from the American Red Cross:
Dear Luanne,

Thank you for giving blood with the American Red Cross on 1/27/2016. Your blood donation was sent to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN to help a patient in need. Your donation is on its way to change lives!
It's really cool when they let me know where my blood ended up (although I wonder if they would tell me that my blood was used to check the efficacy of a machine). I like to imagine my blood being used to help someone, especially since Maribeth needed a few pints when she gave birth to Everley. It just makes my blood donations even that more meaningful!

Roller Derby, Anyone??

Somebody has new skates. Actually, Everley has new skates, too, but she wasn't available for this photo op. Of course, these skates are a bit different than when I had them back in the Dark Ages - you know, the kind with a key to tighten them. No? Then google it. And when you realize the danger they probably represented, keep in mind that we skated with no elbow or knee pads, and certainly no helmet! Which probably explains a lot of things, but I digress ...

Anyhoo, back to Lindley and her skates. I was sitting with her at her house when the skates arrived, so naturally she had to try them out. Luckily she has a fluffy rug in her den so it was a bit easier to try them out.

It's pretty amazing when you see one learning to skate, and it was only yesterday that she was learning to walk (or at least it seems that way to me!)!!

Half Marathon Day!!

Today was another early day, but even earlier because we had to catch the bus instead of taking the car (we knew we wouldn't stay together today). So we ambled out of bed and headed to the buses, arriving at the start just as the National Anthem was being sung. It wasn't too long until our corral took off - and Katie took off quite speedily.  The rest of us took it a bit slower, although Molly quickly left the rest of us.

Around Mile 1, I decided that I needed a potty break. And even though I hoped that I wouldn't have to, I stopped at Mile 3 and waited my turn (it was sort of neat - there was a row of about 20 porta-potties, and they had two volunteers that yelled out which one was empty as soon as a person came out). At this point I was slightly ahead of KB and Marilyn - but not much.

After my turn at the potty, I started again and caught up with Marilyn. We chatted a bit and I pressed on. At Mile 5, I found Molly waiting for me and soon KB was with us (she had stopped for a potty break). The three of us kept going together, unless KB got ahead - but then she waited for us. The last several miles are along the road headed into the Magic Kingdom, and today the sun was out with no clouds, so it started to get a bit warm. But we forged through, and soon finished. We boarded our bus and headed back to our room.

We kept up with Marilyn, who apparently had stopped along the way to help a runner who had fallen down with leg cramps. She finished and soon joined us as we all cleaned up and packed up to leave. Meanwhile, Katie had finished ahead of us all, and was all fresh and packed by the time we arrived.

The sun had sapped all of us, and Marilyn decided to stay at the pool while the rest of us went in search of lunch. We decided on Wolfgang Puck and a little shopping at Disney Springs. Except me, who decided to find the pool (actually the lounge chairs) at Saratoga Springs and take a snoozer. As did Molly, Katie, and KB, once they heard of my plans.

Soon it was time to collect Marilyn and head to the airport for our ride home. Another great Princess Weekend in the books!!

Blingage - why else would one do 13.1 miles?

Yet another amazing photo from the half-marathon.
Yes, KB is wearing gloves, because she is Cinderella.
And she may be brushing her teeth.
Meanwhile, Molly and I are ready to be done!!

KB by the pool. Best part of the day.

10K Day!!

Today we needed to be at the race start at 5:30am. Since we were all going to do this race together (that means they others said they would stay with me no matter how slow I went), we decided to take the car and park it, since the start and finish are basically at the same place.

We all stayed together and got some lovely official race photos, and then snagged a brunch reservation at Akershus in Epcot. So after the race, we walked to the front of Epcot (the start/finish of the 10K is in the Epcot parking lot) and ate breakfast.

Once we were done with that, we ambled back to the car, returned to the room and showered/cleaned up/changed clothes/napped until we decided to go to the movies ("Spotlight" - a really good movie). Afterwards, we stopped by Yacht Club for Katie to pick up some stuff, ordered a pizza to pick up, and stopped by Redbox to get "The Intern" for watching (we needed something light after "Spotlight").

Once all that was done, it was time to turn in for the night. Tomorrow is another early day!

Before the race. It was chilly, hence the mylar blankies.
And now you see the finished Fairy Godmother cape!
It was also dark - oh yeah, it was 5am ...

Post race with our medals in front of Spaceship Earth.
Epcot wasn't officially opened yet, but since we had breakfast reservations,
we could waltz right in!

The ladies with Ariel, the princess featured this year for the races.
By this time, we were full and ready for our nap.

I'm getting the biggest copy available.
We clearly take these races super-seriously ...

No-Race Day!!

It's always nice to have one day that we don't have to get up early for a race. Today was that day. We went to Epcot to eat lunch, to the expo for Marilyn and KB to get their race stuff, and then spent the rest of the day lolly-gagging about. Tomorrow is an early morning for the 10K!

Our cousin Elaine (who lives in Umatilla, Florida) met our group for lunch in Italy.
We look very patriotic, don't you think (of course Marilyn and I would have on the same color!)?
Spaceship Earth fun. Because after overeating in Italy, we needed a nap.

Getting ready for bed - we have an early call in the morning.
And no, we all didn't sleep in one bed!

We're At Disney World!!

Molly and I got up early for the butt-crack early flight to Orlando. It was a quick and smooth flight, even though we were a bit tardy in leaving. Katie arrived a little before we did, so we nabbed her on the way to pick up the car. We stopped for brunch and then headed to the race expo and joined the madness there.

We decided to shop at the outlets for a bit, still waiting for our room to be ready. It eventually was, and we found out that only one of our magic bands worked - Nancy's, who wasn't even coming this weekend. We left to pick up Marilyn and returned to the resort where we took our magic bands to the front desk to get fixed and ended up leaving them. We ate a bite at Shake Shack and then went to pick up KB.

Once everyone was back at the room, we waited for our magic bands to get fixed - they were supposed to call us. After about an hour of no call, Marilyn and I decided to walk to the office to get them. And they were fixed - well, everyone's but mine. Luckily I had a hard ticket for my park pass and Nancy's band to get in the room, so I decided to let it go for now. After all, we're at Disney World!!

Packed and ready! One can never overestimate
the value in choosing the correct suitcase.
Flying over the clouds is pretty. And sometimes a little rumply.
But it's better than flying through them.
I see the Contemporary Resort!!  And Space Mountain!!
I'll be wogging that way in a few days!!
Brunch at KeKe's. Because our room isn't ready yet.

Time To Pack - Again

Yup - going out of town tomorrow. For Princess Weekend at Disney World. Need to pack stuff to give other people, two running outfits, huge bottle of Tylenol, KT tape, ankle braces, bandaids and blister bandaids and bandaid tape, socks, clothes to wear when I'm not wogging, pajamas, underwears, toiletry items, and some other stuff that I can't think of at the moment.

One of these days I'm going to make that packing list ...

And We're Back To Regular Life

Yup, it's good to have a race weekend, then back to normal, then get ready to go on the next race weekend, then back to normal. For awhile.  For today's normal, it involved some Everley and Lindley time, some vacuuming with my new mini shop vac, some catching up on mail and bills, and some laundry. So I can repack some of it tomorrow.  Yay for being home again!!

Breakfast. Or maybe it was lunch. Or brunch. This kid eats them all!!

When you don't want to totally commit to the industrial shop vac,
you go with the baby.
Perhaps I should have chosen the adolescent model ...

Another meal. Or a snack. Because it had been minutes since the last meal ...

Donna's Half Marathon

Today was the big race - the marathon and the half-marathon. This is one of my favorite races, because of the course, the support, and the cause. It's a really "feel good" race, even when you might not be feeling so good. The camaraderie and surroundings are just spectacular.

Steve and I always stay at a hotel at the finish, which is at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville. It's great because as soon as I eventually finish, I can walk to the room. But in the morning before the race, it also means I have to walk and get on a bus to get to the start. This morning it was a bit chilly, and the group of race participants I was with wandered about a bit before eventually finding the bus. And then we were off to the start - where we all huddled around the heaters that were set up.

Eventually the sun came up, we gathered in our corrals and off we went. This is the first year that we haven't run on the beach, which is kind of a disappointment, but it makes the race organization easier. Once again, as they've been for nearly every year, my sister-in-law Kitty and friend Ray were on the course. They waited in the cold for me to (eventually) come along, and it's always such a lift to see them and get a hug! She has on her pink and her 3-Day hat - she's such a good supporter!  Of course, I have on two shirts and pants under my skirt ...

Eventually I made it through 9 miles and started on the final 3, which are the worst three because they are always on slow inclines (up an on ramp then up some small inclines, then up and up and up a big bridge). Speaking of the big bridge, it's the last mile of the race. As you are going up the bridge, the race team has groups to cheer you up the bridge. They also have these signs to inspire you, signs that all the participants signed during the expo and package pick up. There are several of these to be signed, and they're all on the bridge, urging you to get those few more steps in.

I signed one for Marilyn during the expo, which happens to be the one above - can you see where? Here's a hint - it's under the first leg of the "N".

Eventually I made it to the finish line and got my medal. It wasn't my best race of the year - it was a little windy and I was just slow. But it was one of my best, because of all the lives that I think about as I do this race each year. And each year, I hope that research that this race funds will lead to a cure for breast cancer. And it's that thought that brings me back every year - the thought that one day, this race could no longer be needed.

Donna's 5K

Today's 5K started at 8:30, which is such a delightful relief from Disney, which usually start at 5:30am. So Steve and I leisurely got up, got dressed, and headed to the start. Today was a beautiful sunny day, and although it was "cool" (for Jacksonville) at 51 degrees, it certainly was warmer than back home in Nashville, where my sources say it was 20 degrees (and felt like 10).

There are many great things about this 5K - the course by the waterway, the cause, Joan Benoit, and the participants. And did I mention the Chic-Fil-A cow, and the fact that the cow's employer gives out free chicken biscuits before the race?

Anyhow, once the costume judging was done (we didn't enter), Steve and I took off with the other participants. We walked and enjoyed the 3.1 miles and soon were done. And then we headed off to breakfast!!

Steve, Luanne, and The Cow - and then we got our chicken biscuits!

This lady did the 5K pushing her three dachshunds in a double baby stroller.
The passed me. As did the lady who had two knee replacements this year.
I may not be fast, but I am also slow ...
Breakfast at The Fox Restaurant - the "Hawaii 5-0" omelet. Book 'em Danno!!

Another Donna 5K in the books - see you next year!!

Hello Jacksonville!!

This morning Steve and I headed to Jacksonville, where we will be participating in the races in the 26.2 With Donna Breast Cancer Weekend. Steve and I will be doing the 5K, and I will be doing the half-marathon. I've done this every year since it started, and it's one of my favorite races.

Normally we would travel on Thursday before the race, but Steve had work stuff to do, so we couldn't leave until today. Steve's sister Kitty also lives here, and we usually have time to see her and have dinner. But since this is such a short trip, we'll basically have time for a quick visit (she works at Stein Mart, so Steve kinda likes to visit her at work). Anyhow, the weather looks to be great, and we're hoping for a great weekend.

After a safe, smooth flight, we landed in Jacksonville around 12:45pm. We went straight to the expo to pick up our race stuff (and maybe a few other things). Then we headed to one of our favorite spots, The Metro Diner, where I had my usual Charleston Shrimp and Grits. After that it was time to check into our hotel, get settled a bit, and head to see Kitty. We finished the day with a burger at Colonel Mustard's Phat Burgers. Not exactly a sensible eating day, but it certainly was a delicious one!  Maybe I'll walk off the calories tomorrow ...

I had shrimp and grits. Steve had half a friend chicken.

Something Else Is A'Coming

Today's agenda including washing all the baby clothes, because we have a baby coming! Maribeth and Mathieu and Everley are expecting a baby girl. Technically, she is due on Pi Day - March 14. But since babies tend to come when they want, and since I have a couple of trips in the next few weeks, today turned out to be the day to do baby laundry.

Because Maribeth is the consummate bargain shopper/finder, she has managed to get clothes in several sizes (most of Everley's clothes have been distributed about, and besides, new babies deserve new clothes). So part of the laundry was to separate them into sizes. Of course, the sizes don't make a difference until Baby arrives, and we see how big she is and how fast she grows. It's kind of like the boxes I have in my closet - those labeled "lose 20 pounds" and "lose a ton." Anyhow, Baby will have plenty of cute outfits for when she makes her appearance, and certainly will fit into one of these boxes of clothes.

It's been four years since we've had a newborn hanging around. Everley is excited about her new baby sister (and we're hoping the euphoria lasts). It will be fun to have a little cuddle baby again. And it won't be long until all these boxes will be empty again - cuddle babies have a way of growing up fast!!

Barbie Time!!

It would appear that Lindley and Everley have developed an interest in Barbie. This delights me, as I was a huge Barbie fan while growing up. Of course back then, we had the basic Barbie, Ken, Midge, Alan, and Skipper. I started out with the basic Barbie with pony tail, and eventually moved up to (gasp) Barbie with bendable legs. I loved Barbie because I could imagine a whole other life using my Barbie dolls.

I've kept up with Barbie over the years, as she morphed into a modern woman with careers and all kinds of hair and more accessories and family members. Maribeth even had a custom Barbie made for me one year. It's really getting interesting with Barbie coming out with the new "natural size" Barbies. For awhile I collected Barbies, but stopped and gave them away when it all became too much - mainly, why collect them to have them languish in a box, when they should be played with?

Anyhow, recently it seems that Lindley and Everley have started playing with them - mainly taking them swimming in the bathtub and changing their clothes. And because I am such a Barbie fan, while we're out shopping, I pretty much direct them to the Barbie aisle and manage to get a few things - not that they object. So naturally it came to the point where they needed something to carry all the Barbie stuff in. And so I decided I needed another project - hence the Barbie tool tote box.

I'm not sure if it will keep their stuff from getting lost, but let's face it - it was really more for me than them anyway!

*Carb loading is important for athletes
*We are doing the Princess Glass Slipper Challenge in a few weeks
*I needed something to do while waiting in the check-out lane at the Wal-Mart
*Like most chocolate, they were singing to me from their place in the display
*Their commercials entertain me, so in a way, it's kinda like paying for a movie I watch

Whuuut? Again??

So last night the weather forecasters predicted snow again. I know, they are certainly earning their money this year, but I think they are so excited and thrilled about some actual snow they would probably do it for free. Anyhoo, on to the snow.

As usual, I did not believe them. I've lived in the South long enough not to expect snow when they say, and certainly not enough to believe the weather people when they predict it. And once again, I was wrong. The snow came down and covered the yard, although the streets stayed clear. It was pretty, it was quick, and it was enjoyable (from the window at my desk, where I enjoyed it). But it really didn't bolster my faith in the weather dudes and dudettes. I think they're really as surprised as I usually am!!

Same photo, same location, different day. In the same year.
I know - amazing! For Nashville, anyway!!

Breakfast At The Egg And I

Today Moo, KB, Everley, and I decided to have breakfast at The Egg and I, a local eatery. We love it, but apparently it won't be staying as The Egg and I for long, since First Watch apparently bought it out and will be changing it over.

So, would you like to hear about the photo?  Today is my friend Pam's birthday. Pam is the bride from the bridesmaids cruise last year. Our group of four decided that this year, on each of our birthdays, we would put on our "I'm With The Princesses" shirt (we all have one) and make a photo wherever we are and send it to the birthday girl. Hence the loaded breakfast potatoes and the candle. Everley clearly looks a bit bewildered by it all. And why is KB in the photo? Because she's Pam's friend, too, having spend last Princess Half Marathon weekend getting up at 4am and getting to the race with Pam (KB even has on her Princess race shirt).

And so you have it. I'm at the Egg and I having a totally calorie-laden breakfast for Pam's birthday. Because that's just the kind of friend I am!!

Saturday with LaLa and Moo

Last night we managed to get to sleep at a reasonable hour (we needn't discuss what that hour was), so this morning we pretty much woke up in happy spirits. We had breakfast (which might have had some nutritional value) and got dressed (and hair brushed), which took most of the morning. We then picked up Moo and headed to lunch and then some Target shopping. Which pretty much makes for a happy Saturday for all!!

At least they were drinking milk ...

Hair transformation #1.
Only used a portion of one bottle of detangling spray.
Thank goodness, because we had another one to go.

Hair transformation #2 - LaLa is obsessive about hair.
Probably a leftover effect of her own childhood.
Where it took hours to get out the tangles.
And we needn't even mention pink sponge rollers ....

Brunch with Moo. Actually went better than it appears.
Target-ing had been promised since the morning, and it was time to go!
Also, the braids had about 5 more minutes before they were unbraided - by the owners.
Finally!! Mecca!! Sans braids, of course!!

Slarty At LaLa's

Due to various work commitments by their parental units, Everley and Lindley were to spend the night with me. First the parental units came over and we all had dinner (that would be Dominos. Or Papa Johns. Like there's a difference). Then the adults left and the girls did a craft project. And then changed into pj's. And then argued over which movie to watch, until LaLa decided The Disney Channel would suffice. Eventually it all worked and we all went to sleep. What a good night!!

LaLa's idea of an art project.  Glue stuff onto a foam plate.
It worked, and the results were beautiful!
Two girls and two baby dolls.
And at some point, one LaLa in the middle!!
