Halloween or Not ...

Not my favorite holiday.  Don't like the candy (because if I buy the cheap stuff, nobody comes to the door and I have it all left over, and end up eating it because I don't like waste).  Don't like the scary because I don't like scary.  Don't like having to go to the door to greet trick-or-treaters who are too old for candy-begging, yet I'm too afraid of them and what they might do to my house if I don't give them the good candy.  Don't like buying the good candy, because it might all be gone before the first trick or treater arrives.

So, I shall buy medium candy and make Steve answer the door.  I will not watch the various scary movies on tv and watch Lifetime Movie Network.  In response to the holiday, I shall get a flu shot and give blood tomorrow.

Happy Halloween!!

And Then It Was Tuesday ...

It always seems to happen when I travel home on a Monday - I seem to lose a day, and by the time I get unpacked and caught up (relatively), it's Tuesday.  Only it feels like it should be Monday.

Anyhoo, between Sandy and the mess that is presently my house and the stuff that I need to do, I've been busy today.  I've unpacked, changed the sheets, hung pictures, shortened a bedspread, picked up Lindley at school, played with Lindley and Everley, surfed the 'net for Sandy news, fixed dinner (okay, so I got Maribeth to order pizza - at least I was in charge of dinner), and loaded the dishwasher.  Pretty typical daily things, especially if it's a Monday.

Except that it's Tuesday, and tomorrow is Wednesday, and the cats are about out of food and I have no candy for Halloween.

Guess I'd better start tomorrow's list.  It's Wednesday, right?

What A Great Weekend!!

Sometimes things just go right.  Such was the case for the past weekend.  Plans went as planned, or at least went according to changes in plans.  We had fun, met some new friends, and had some unforgettable experiences.  Old friendships were renewed, with promises of future adventures.  And as meaningful as walking those 60 miles was, I think offering support was equally meaningful.

Maybe it is because I know how important it is to have someone along the way to perk you up and get you a little further down the road.  Maybe it is because having been there, I know what someone might need while on their 60-mile journey.  Maybe it's because seeing so many young women wearing survivor shirts, that the cause becomes an even more important one to support.  Maybe it's because I had the opportunity to help someone else, and I took it.  Maybe it's because some dear friends said, "Sure - we have no idea what we're in for, but we believe in you and will do whatever you ask."

Whatever the reason, it was one of the best weekends ever.  There wasn't a moment that I would have changed, and every moment will be remembered with great love and gratitude.  Thanks Emily and Jeanne for a truly wonderful weekend!!

You Mean It's Over??

Today was going to be our last cheering day.  As usual, we went to our assigned spot, and decided to find another one we liked better.  We found a park spot by a lake and set up shop.  This morning we were going to give out cards with a pink coin glued to it and a little poem that said,
Keep this little coin, to remind you of this day,
And all the miles you walked, down here in Tampa Bay.
We think you're really special, and we just want to say,
Thanks for all you've done to send breast cancer away!
It was our way of really thanking these women and men for walking 60 miles for this cause.  Soon the walkers started arriving and we started passing our our cards.

Today we decided to wear our pjs.  Our sign leading to our table said,

We overslept, but you didn't, because
YOU'RE AWESOME!
Thank you for walking!

We even had special sombreros with curlers - even Pini had a curler in her hair.  It was really amazing to see the walkers coming up to our table.  Some of them were really walking slow or limping and looking like they had just about had it (or maybe had walked 40 miles in the past two days).  Once they saw us and our sign, you could see the smile cross their lips.  They were becoming our friends, and our seeing each other was like seeing family.

It wasn't long until the last walker came past (the last walker was always followed by a bicycle dude, so we knew she was the last walker).  We loaded up our stuff (and Jeanne and Emily changed into shorts and proper shoes.  No, I didn't, although I did take off my hat) and we headed for lunch, this time at the St. Pete Pier, because that's where closing ceremonies would be.

After lunch, we decided to go cheer in the walkers as they headed to the finish and the holding area.  We wore our big sombreros, and it was so sweet to have walkers stop and hug us as they finished.  At one point, a walker stopped and asked if she could trade shoes with me (I still had on my fuzzy slippers).  Of course, I gave them to her, knowing how much better her feet would feel sans sneakers.

We stayed for Closing Ceremonies and cheered as the walkers, then the walkers who are breast cancer survivors walk in.  Many of them saw us and there were more hugs and waves and thanks.  It was so humbling and touching and I think we all were moved even more as the Closing Ceremonies were celebrated and the 3-Day Walk Weekend came to a close.

It was a great weekend that seemed long at times but went by too quickly.  But isn't that the way it always is when you're surrounded by the love of family and friends?

Tampa - Day 2

We didn't have to start as early this morning to get to our cheer spot.  We were assigned a spot each day, but each day we would go inspect that spot, deem it unacceptable, and find one that we liked.  Wonder why the cheer group supervisor never found us

Anyhow, today we were going to hand out pink mardi gras beads.  After not liking our assigned spot, we found a better one and parked the car in front of a waiting-to-be-sold subdivision.  While we waited for the walkers to arrive, we chatted with a snowbird dude who was waiting for his friends to walk past (dude forgot to bring his shirts down for the winter - we think it's because his mom packed his clothes, or so he said.  By the way, dude is in his 60s).  After chatting with Dude and getting a lot of his personal information, the walkers started arriving.  They were beginning to remember us, and were so happy to see us (or happy that the next pit stop was just down the street).  Soon we had given away all our beads and cheered the last walker, so we headed out for lunch.  Today we were determined to really eat lunch and not subsist on ice cream.

We drove around looking for fast food (since we still had another cheer spot to find), passing walkers on their route.  We settled for McDonald's and then set out to find our next spot - a deserted lot that we pulled the car on and set up shop.  Our afternoon agenda was to pass out shots of Coke and Diet Coke to those walkers who wanted some - and there were plenty (for all you cola addicts out there, you understand what it's like to not have your drink of choice).  You would have thought we were handing out bars of gold.  The walkers would see one of us holding up the bottles, their mouths would drop, and they would beeline for our table.  It was so great!!

Soon the last walker headed past our table toward home, and it was our turn to head home.  We stopped by Olive Garden for some much needed food, followed by a shower and bed (well, I had to stay up to watch Alabama beat Mississippi State in football - GO DAWGS!).  Tomorrow morning was going to come soon enough!!

As promised, here are some pictures!!

The 3-Amigomobile

Jeanne's and my sign - Emily had her own survivor sign to which many of the walkers would give her a hug or a high-five and say to her, "That's why I walk."

Go Walkers!!

We got up early because I wanted Emily and Jeanne to see Opening Ceremonies for the 3-Day.  Jeanne's husband Ken suggested that we leave early, as to avoid possible traffic.  Since Emily and I sorta took the long way to Jeanne's house from the airport (meaning we didn't listen to the Garmin lady and didn't take the turns she kept suggesting and re-suggesting when she rerouted us several times), we thought leaving early was probably a good idea.  So we left the house at 5:30am.

We got to the site of the Opening Ceremonies at 6:30 am (Opening Ceremonies started at 7:30), which meant we had plenty of time to decorate the car (in the dark).  By decorating (in the dark), we would save time at our first cheer station.  We made it to the Opening Ceremonies, which still made me get all verklempt, even though I wasn't walking.  It's just such a touching opening to this event, remembering and honoring all those loved ones who fight and have lost to this disease.

Soon the walkers were sent off for the day, and we got in our newly-decorated car and headed off to our first cheer station.  We donned our outfits and started handing out our first giveaway - tiny little maracas with a pink ribbon sticker on them.  At this point, the walkers were still full of adrenaline from Opening Ceremonies, so everyone was excited and happy.

After the last walker had passed this station, we loaded up the car and headed to McD's for some breakfast, then went in search of our second cheering station (I might add that Jeanne was under the impression that we would go to one spot, hand out something, and return home.  Poor Jeanne - she hadn't realized she was travelling with a nutcase!)  We saw the walkers crossing the street up ahead, so we pulled into a Walgreeens they would pass and we set up shop.  Here we gave out pink suckers and shook our pink maracas that Emily had decorated.  It was really cool that some of the walkers would shake their tiny maracas in our honor as they passed us.  We even had to offer first aid (even though we had none) when one of the walkers took a tumble on an uneven bit of pavement.  But she got up and walked on, and we packed up after the last walker passed us.

We decided to do one last cheer stop and headed in that direction.  We couldnt' find a suitable lunch spot, so we decided on ice cream, and then settled down to wait for the walkers.  We were about a half-mile from their final pit stop.  By the time the walkers got to us, they had just about had it.  Their last few miles were directly into the sun on a warm, cloudless day, so we tried to cheer them on with suckers and a bit of dancing.  Oh well, at least maybe it got them down that last half-mile!

We finally left to go home, where Ken went out and brought back dinner.  At that point, we all decided to clean up and go to bed.  I told the other two amigos that the bus tour would meet in the morning at the kitchen table at 8am for Saturday's assignments.  Here's hoping the whole crew gets a good night's sleep!!

Travellin' Thursday

Today I flew to Tampa to meet up with Jeanne and Emily for our "3 Amigos Go Pink" weekend.  After a drought of many years, we three friends have managed to get together more often.  This weekend it's to cheer the 3-Day breast cancer walkers in Tampa, where Jeanne lives (Emily lives in Durham, NC).

Emily (a five-year breast cancer survivor) and Jeanne (whose sister is a seven-year survivor) have never experienced a 3-day event.  I'm not sure if cheering the walkers will inspire them to walk or discourage them, but I'm glad they get to be a part of it.  For me, I can't wait to be on the cheering side of the event.  Knowing what those 60 miles feels like to walk, I also know how much it means to see a smiling face and hear a happy word of encouragement.

So, if the blog posts come even later than usual (shocker, I know), it's because I didn't get the pictures loaded or computer time or I'm busy hot-gluing things together.  It's going to be a great weekend!!!

Whazzup?

So, it's been busy around here.  While the upstairs remodel is finished, the downstairs bathroom updates have begun.  The dust continues to multiply overnight, and things that I have stored during the remodel apparently multiplied while in storage, which means there's even more to un-store and put away.  I sorta clean - mainly if someone is coming over or I need clean underwear.

Then there's my upcoming weekend.  My two friends Emily and Jeanne and I are going to cheer the Komen 3-Day walkers in Tampa.  Since we call ourselves "The Three Amigos," we decided on a theme of pinatas, sombreros, and maracas (to name a few).  I decided to make pink serapes (use your imagination - it helps when you see the finished product) which I need to finish before the plane leaves tomorrow at noon.  Thanks to Micaela, KB, and Ms. Ruth, the maraca and pink coin giveaway projects got finished.  I just also need to finish the pink sombrero headband and pack and I think I'll be ready.

At least until we get to Tampa, which is when we'll need to decorate the car, figure out where we need to be, and purchase the Diet Cokes for the walkers.  It's going to be great fun, being on the supporting end of the 3-Day.

Hopefully the dust and stored stuff will cease procreating in my absence ...

Why I Won't Be Watching The Debate

1.  I already voted.
2.  Each debater's supporters will be talking about how brilliant, succinct, and clever their candidate is, while equally bashing the other candidate as a moronic blubbering idiot.
3.  Sometimes nobody needs to be the winner.
4.  I don't like arguments, and that's just the day-after facebookers that I'm talking about.
5.  There's a new episode of "Love It or List It" coming on.
6.  Can't we all just get along?

The Color Run

This "run" was a "5K" (which seemed the shortest three miles I've ever covered, therefore leading me to believe that it was less than a 5K) which involved trotting along a course and getting doused with powdered paint.   It was a lot of fun with friends, and also involved changing clothes in a parking garage while two people were putting together their hoveround, going to eat at Amerigo's while still mostly covered in paint, and showering for awhile to return my skin color to its normal pasty pale.   In other words, just another day!!

Ah, the pristine cleaness of clean white shirts!

See the fuzzy cloudy pink and blue puffs down by the stadium? That's paint being thrown!

We made it through all paint stations and paused for a scenic view by the river.

We be done, and we be painty-ful!!

Dinner with Friends

Tonight we got together to celebrate British Karen's birthday (which technically isn't until the end of the month, but some of us will be out of town, so we had it early).  We had lots of cupcakes, chips and dips, cheese thingys, popcorn, boiled peanuts, and a bottle or two of wine.  We topped the night off by watching one of BK's (and my) favorite movie, "Shirley Valentine."  It was a great night, as the Udderly Pink team remembered fun times in San Francisco and celebrated friendship.

Good friends and good times - what could be better?

The Iron-y

Last month while I was in San Francisco, I bought a new pair of fancy socks. They are fancy because they are very thick and are supposedly moisturizing.  Since I have just now unearthed them from the piles of stuff that was on my desk, I though I would study the washing instructions (not that I would follow them if they were something ridiculous like hand-wash).  Luckily for me, they are to be laundered in the usual way - machine wash and dry.  HOWEVER, the next line on the care instructions was this:  "Do not iron."  These three little words have me mystified.  Does anyone really iron their socks?  What would happen if I went a little cray-cray and decided to iron these socks - would the act of ironing negate the act of moisturizing?  Where is my iron?  How do I turn it on?  And finally, if one would choose to iron their socks, does it mean that their other undergarments should be ironed as well?

Thank you for your attention.  Today's blog has been brought to you by the words "iron" and "no way."

Just Another Saturday

So, in an effort to turn the dining room back into a dining room instead of the storage shed it had become, I had to transfer all the boxes of stuff from the dining room to my bedroom.  So now, instead of eating in a storage shed, I am sleeping in one.  Is this progress?  I would write a lengthy dissertation on this subject, but earlier this morning, in a bold attempt to shave my legs, somehow I managed to slice a slit in my little finger fingernail, thus creating a fingernail that has part of it cut down to the "quick."  In other words, I cannot use my left pink finger to type, because it hurts, and apparently there are a lot of important letters that are in the left pinky finger's jurisdiction.  Luckily my injured pinky did not impede my efforts to rescue the baby mole/mouse that Maggie the Cat decided to bring into the aforementioned dining room, I guess because Maggie thought the mole mouse should see it.  Maggie's new friend was scooped up into a box and deposited outside, I guess where he/she found a much less cluttered place to eat and sleep.

And that is the gist of my Saturday - now to find a spot in which to lay my weary head. . .

How Clutter Multiplies

Not me, at least not yet ...
Today I had to go to the storage place to get some of Steve's golf clubs.  You know, the storage shed where I've been storing all the furniture that I needed to put somewhere while the upstairs remodel was going on.  After crawling over the chairs and boxes and heaving the golf bag with the desired clubs over the boxes and chairs, I became a little dismayed.  Why?  Because I kept seeing things that I had forgotten I had, and that might have to make their way back into my house.  It was daunting enough, until I went to the second, smaller storage unit, and observed more furniture that I had forgotten I had.  I locked both units and went home and ate a bag of pretzels and a bag of cookies and anything else I could put my hands on.  I think that's an example of clutter begetting clutter ...  All I know for sure is that I begetting a headache ...

And Then There's Another One

When I started doing the Komen 3-Day Walks, I really didn't know many people who had breast cancer.  Sure, I obviously knew about breast cancer, and I learned a lot on that walk, as well as meeting many breast cancer survivors.  But I mainly did that first walk because I wanted a new challenge - little did I know that I had a new purpose.

With each walk, I found that I began to know more and more people with breast cancer.  First it was my friend Emily.  Then it was Joey's wife.  Then it was my Aunt Laura.  Then it was friends who gave me names of their loved ones with breast cancer.  I've even made cyber-friends with survivors like Mary, who has donated to two separate walks.  This summer it was my sister Marilyn.  And today I found out that breast cancer has found its way to a young mother named Amanda, a friend of my daughter, Molly.

The good news is that great strides are being made in the fight against this disease.  My hope and prayer is that one day soon I will see a cure and this disease will become one that will be diagnosed, treated, and cured.  Until then, I'll keep walking, because Emily, Aunt Laura, Mary, Marilyn, Amanda, and too many others have too much more to do in this life than fight breast cancer.

Yes, they're Disney shampoos, conditioners, soaps, shower washes, lotions, and even a shower cap.

Yes, they might have been collected at various stays at various magical resorts, Denise.

No, they were not pilfered from the mousekeeping carts, Marilyn.

Moo's Room

Okay, although it's currently bereft of my billions of Disney pictures and crapola, I thought I would post a few teaser pictures of the upstairs.  I guess if you want to see the finished product, you will have to come and spend the night!  Anyhow, this is the progress thus far in Molly's room (Moo to Lindley and all that follow).  Although, today when I asked Lindley if this room was hers and Moo's room, Lindley replied, "It's mine and mommy's room!" - picture attached for that one, too.

This is Lindley's bed (Kat, if you're reading, notice the quilt?) and the Mickey television/dvd player.  Today "Cinderella" was watched.  The hole in the wall leads to the cubbyhole - which I guess would kinda count as a "ride", which you can only experience if you're booked into the Mickey room!
This is the bed - the headboard was a former king size headboard.  The bed was built to cover some pipes and stuff - originally it was going to be a shelf, until we decided why not just make it into a bed.  The king-size quilt (from the Disney Store for all you quilt-type people) will need some adjustments, but it's tucked in for now.

These were today's guests for the "Cinderella" showing, and later this was the requested location for the afternoon nap (that would be Lindley's, not Lynnette's).  And for those of you that will be needing it, you can see that not only do we have a step stool to get up to the bed, but we have a safety rail to keep you from falling off the bed!

So there you are - a sneak preview of one bedroom.  The other one is still in the planning stages - can anyone say Animal Kingdom?

Today we passed our final inspection for the upstairs remodel.  We are cleared for occupancy! Now comes the fun part of deciding what goes where, although Lindley has already designated where her bed and Everley's bed should go.

My Guest Blogger - Maggie the Cat

Because I've been out of town a bit lately, Maggie the Cat has become a bit needy.  Actually, she's always been a bit needy, but it seems she's taken her neediness to a new height.  Tonight I had a brilliant blog post (yep, that's my story and I'm sticking to it), but Maggie had other ideas.  In fact, she found a haiku that expresses her feelings:

What I Didn't Do Today

1. Unpack the suitcase - if I wait long enough and use the clean clothes that are in the suitcase, then eventually the suitcase will be unpacked all by itself.

2.  Cook dinner - I decided not to cook because the floor dudes would be making a a lot of noise and a big mess (which didn't happen since they didn't come anyway).

3.  Watch the presidential debate - I don't like debates and I don't like salesmen and I figured I could get a political recap via facebook, so I opted for House Hunters instead.

4. Clean anything - that would involve unearthing layers of stuff/dust/whatever just to find the mess that is lurking underneath, so I opted for House Hunters International instead.

5.  Eat sensible meals - with so many things not to do, it just seemed easier to eat whatever seemed to pass in my way, which seemed to determine which way I went.

Can't wait to see what I don't get done tomorrow!

According my my calculations, I was home for eight days during the month of September.  While I loved and am grateful for all that travel and those experiences, I am even more grateful to be home tonight.

I am thankful to be home to the remodeling progress and all the house cleaning that lies ahead.

I am thankful to be home to two kitties who (I think) are just as happy to see me (and perhaps will stop retaliating by leaving little "gifties" in places other than their litter box).

I am thankful to be home to a big list of things to do, because it is a list of things to do at my house, which I can do in my pajamas if I wish.

I am thankful to be home where the fall weather is approaching, complete with rainy, cool days and the promise of fall colors.

I am thankful to be home where I can get back to eating with some degree of intelligence and get back on the road to physical fitness.

I am thankful to be home where my stuff is, where my smells are, and where my loved ones call home.

It's good to be home!!
