San Francisco 3-Day - Day One

We had a few hours sleep after Molly finally got to the hotel around midnight.  We were supposed to be in the hotel lobby at 5am to catch the shuttle to opening ceremonies, so you can do the math to figure out how much sleep we got!  Before we knew it, we were on the bus, ready to go.

After a quick bus ride, we were at Opening Ceremonies.  We stashed our bags in the "A" U-Haul truck and went to the gathering area.  It was time to begin.  A group of men and women brought in flags representing the people they are walking for, followed by group of survivors who brought in flags representing events and experiences they are hoping for.  We all had a moment to shout out the names of those we love who are survivors, fighters, or who were lost to breast cancer.  With a final shout, we were off - to walk 60 miles against this disease.

We headed off to Sausalito and the Golden Gate Bridge.  We ate lunch at the base of the Golden Gate, then headed up to walk across the bridge (and I mean up and up!).  We crossed the bridge (along with the tourists, the bicyclists, and the rush of cars going past).  Once off the bridge, we headed to Fisherman's Wharf to catch a ferry to Treasure Island - our home away from home (which required another 1.5 mile walk to camp).  Total for today:  20 miles.

We had to set up our tent (a little difficult with a strong headwind), get a shower, and eat a hot dinner.  We also went to the main tents to shop a little and get our special buttons.  Three of us has surprise chocolates from friends - mine was from Mary, a friend I've never officially met in person, but who has supported me in both San Diego and San Francisco 3-Day walks - what a special surprise and blessing!  By this time, Molly and I were exhausted and stayed awake long enough for someone in the next tent to say, "Good Night, John-Boy!"  And with that, Day One was in the books.

Post Lunch - we've got to get to that bridge!

This is how we got to the bridge - from way down yonder!

We made it to the bridge - lunch was down at those buildings to the left!

The Bridge - we saw it from every angle for three days!
