Prison, Chowder, and Cable Cars

On today's agenda was our tour of Alcatraz.  We got up early and got a cab to Pier 33 to catch our ferry to the island (yeah, we could have walked, but that would have involved getting up even earlier!).  While the weather has been great, today was our first real taste of cold San Francisco weather - at least cold for us!  We donned our sweatshirts and boarded our vessel.  Soon we were in sight of this infamous prison.

We took the audio tour and were fascinated by the stories of the prison, told by former prisoners and guards.  There was so much to learn - it was pretty amazing, not to mention the amazing sights of the Golden Gate and San Francisco.  We watched a film about the families who actually lived on the island and the Indian occupation.  In other words, we got a pretty good history lesson today.

After a stop at the obligatory souvenir shop,  (and a bathroom stop), it was time to board the ship for our return to the mainland.  It was also time for lunch, so we decided to wander down Fisherman's Wharf for some much-needed sustenance.  We found it in the form of clam chowder and fish at one of the seafood places.

Feeling refueled, we walked down to the cable cars (ignoring the Ghiradelli building) and climbed aboard.  While we didn't get an outside seat, it still was fun riding and seeing the sights along the way.  We made it back to the condo, and the Karens went out for a bit more shopping, while I stayed back and tried to get rid of the head cold that Molly so kindly bestowed upon me before she went back to Nashville.  Tomorrow while the Karens are off on their Napa adventure, I hope to get some serious cold-knocker-outer drugs in an attempt to feel better before our big weekend.

Only three more days until the 3-Day!!
